Priceline is the clearing house for the travel industry

...

In keeping with the added-value strategy, Starwood and the other major hotel operators said they do not plan to offer any special discounts to customers who use the Internet. The strategy comes in sharp contrast to the major airlines, which have used special Internet fares to push people to the cheaper booking venue.

``From a strategic standpoint, we're saying you can get all of our rates through all of our channels,'' said Wolff of Marriott. ''There may be some short-term tactical promotions for booking online. ... But we want people to be comfortable that if you go through any one of our channels you'll get the best we have to offer.''

Burritt of Ernst & Young said the hotel operators -- at least for now -- would prefer to leave the discounting business to clearing houses like Priceline.com Inc. (NasdaqNM:PCLN - news), where customers must trade off not being able to select their hotel in exchange for heavily discounted room rates.

``They're worried (that if they get into the discounting business) that they'll be out there competing with Priceline,'' Burritt said. ``The Priceline product is the inventory the hotels know they can't sell. They don't want to be out there competing against themselves from that perspective.''
