Definitely you need to establish a rhythm, which then gets you into the "zone". It's like when I'm cycling up a hill I often times count to myself to establish a rhythm which then in turn somehow takes your mind off what you're really doing. Also with running it's good to find a nice place to do it, especially when you start getting to 3 miles or more. I used to do this three mile run that started off fairly flat, then went to a fast incline hill, leveled off then went up again. Then it went downhill (which can be challenging also) and finally leveled off for like the last mile. The fun part, beside the challenge of the terrain was that it was a nice (fairly scenic) loop.
