I have at times compared the ability of the US to run huge trade deficits year after year to the tribute exacted on its colonies by the Roman empire.

BTW the end of the dollar bull probably will lead in time to a new international monetary system not so heavily weighted in favor of the buck. The current system where the prosperity of many nations rests on the ability of the US to keep running huge trade deficits cannot last much longer IMHO.
