For all of you armchair Fed governors out there who think the economy is just booming along, please visit jjetstream's Layoffs thread.
Not only have we surpassed the 800,000 mark in layoffs, but by my count, there were about 3,000 announced June 21 alone, with another five-digit cleansing possibly in the works at AT&T.
I would even be willing to factor out the dot-coms and other direct Web plays. Gap, Knight-Ridder and the like haven't been part of a wave of hype in a long time, yet they are prominent recent additions to the layoff trend.
Aggressive Fed easing and, more recently, sharp declines in fuel prices haven't yet persuaded personnel managers that good times are just around the corner.
Psychology can be stubbornly slow to change.
And so we wait.

Hey, I got my first cool post! Neat-O

But just one in a long line of well reasoned posts
Congrats
FWIW a buddy of mine runs the fuel desk at a local truck stop here in the St. Louis area and Wednesday he told me things were finally starting to pickup
