Anatomy of The Analyst Upgrade (where was CNBC?)

I found it particularly funny (read as "sad") to see the
reporting by CNBC of the sole analyst upgrading JDSU on the
promise of a 2002 turn around. First as you can see below
WIT is a permaBULL on JDSU having consistently and always
had an overall BUY rating on JDSU.

Did CNBC report on this? Nope. Faber? nope Kernan? Nope.
Maria? Nope, Frank? Nope. Faber even says he is on top of
this stuff. I went back as far as I could easily do.

Look at the Parade of Analyst coming out BUY BUY BUY . .
and the favorite of the savvy Analyst the REITERATES.
Then wait look its down from the 60s in January, its JUNE
now, TIME TO HOLD…sent out a release to public HOLD,
everyone it time to HOLD. Join hands, sing,
Kumbyaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Look at WR Hambrecht, US Bancorp Piper, and CSFB below.
Anyone reading them from January would have to feel like an
idiot not to buy the stock. These three are literally
YELLING – Buy it, Buy IT, BUY IT. Just look.

But where were the analysts of the Analyst at CNBC,
unfortunately no where to be found. All I saw CNBC do was
act like a vase empty canyon, and echo and echo and echo
the Analyst Upgrade.

Anatomy of the UP-grade (WIT SOUNDVIEW)

JDSU and a significant portion of the Optical Networking Sector was bounced on Friday, but why? Why when not a
single of the companies have stated that a turn around is near, and even the most optimistic Analyst believe the
recovery is going to happen in 2002.

Well the answer is one loan Analyst, the analyst on JDSU that was one week late for his opinion. That’s right after
JDSU had a horrific and terrible warning a week earlier had major analysts put out the obligatory statements on the
company. They apparently actually listened to the CC call. On June 15th 2001

US Bancorp Piper, CSFB, SG Cowen, ABN AMRO Merrill Lynch, First Union Securities, Lehman Brothers,Wachovia Sec ALL
stated holds or downgrades to hold.

Also on June 15th, 2001 WR Hambrecht, Robertson Stephens,
Banc of America Securities and JP Morgan H&Q all put out REITERATES of BUYS.

Not to be outdone Wit Soundview that still as the JDSU lost over 75% of it Total price, well Wit thought about it, for
a full Week, then they decided it was time to put the Public in this stock again. Hey Lucent is a buy at 18 bucks
too, gotta be!

See how Wit Soundview (read as WIT Capital, the firm created almost exclusively to sell IPO share in 1999-2000)
to the Public on 1/22/01 from SuperDuper Buy, to just BUY. Notice the stock closed that day at 59.75,
the next day it put in the HIGH for the year 64.95, after that all the people Bought JDSU lost it.

So as not to confuse the PUBLIC, WIT Soundview came out with a REITERATION OF BUY IT, just 4 days later on 1/26/01.

Well they called the bottom, right the upgrade means we have bottomed? Well only through bad reporting. Wit
Soundview has not called the bottom, they only expect that by September, that the downcycle should be over. Implying
that—well I take that back, implying nothing like a bounce or a strong recovery or anything like that. Just that it
won’t get any worse after September quarter.

See what he said---
"Customer activity levels are unsustainably low and in our judgment the company's September-quarter guidance will
prove the low," wrote analyst Kevin Slocum.

Just what are you saying Kevin, can you add some fluff and mumbo in for me??? Please?

"We expect carriers to improve their spending patterns moving through next year. That should drive improving
results from the levels that will be reported for the June quarter and predicted for September," he wrote.
The economic concerns that exacerbated the slowdown in
spending "precipitated an unsustainably low level of equipment investment."

Thank you

Were there any bright spots in these Analysts?---YES Looking at just JDSU I would have to say that Ryan, Beck Co
and Lehman Brothers. Did the best jobs for the public that the could have reasonable done, called it quickly, and called it correctly.

Way back in January when the world was upgrading, Lehman rating came out as overall HOLD and for the optical sector
they were right—JDSU performed right with the sector.

Princeton, New Jersey, Jan. 29 (Bloomberg Data) -- JDS Uniphase Corp.
(JDSU US) was reiterated ''market perform'' by analysts Steven D. Levy and
Arnab K Chanda at Lehman Brothers.

The first Analysts to SEE IT and CALL IT was Ryan, Beck & Co. They also gave the most clear cut signal. Strong BUY
to HOLD. Some could fault the Strong Buy rating that they cut,
but if you real the times and the sector, that was
reasonable enough and correct enough for overall sentiment and general projections.

Princeton, New Jersey, Jan. 26 (Bloomberg Data) -- JDS Uniphase Corp.
(JDSU US) was downgraded to ''hold'' from ''strong buy'' by
analyst Jordan Estra at Ryan, Beck & Co.

The market is about expectations, and I fully expect that WIT Soundview will continue to maintain BUY no matter what
type of warnings and write off happen. I don’t know why this is, but its my expectation.

But hey we just report the news our viewers should know, and because of that we report Analysts, because we think our views should have that information, its valueable to them.

So was it any "news" or any wonder that WIT Soundview continued it's BUY rating. Not unless you are a lame-O.

CNBC did a rather decent job on the ABX HM merger today, thank all there for the fair & equal treatment. A bit more in depth reporting of the hedge position(s) might be in the best interest of the investor.

btw You know, were exactly the same EU (competitor considered) standards used to kill the GE/HON deal applied to the ABX/HM deal, the ABX/HM deal would also fail muster.

As HM & AU(a major competitor)is traded on German exchange, what will they do? Tracking(and reporting on) the ABX/HM Vs the GE/HON merger might well answer some valuable higher questions about the EU of Europe, about how how guys are being screwed by the socialists, about gold, & if there is or is not something underhanded going on in Europe to suppress the price of gold.

Ted, you're a good guy. You obviously have some real journalism experience, as opposed to some of your sidekicks on the air. Just to clarify, my rant last week, was not about covering GE per se..it was the EDITORIALIZING by the on air folks..when you have such an obvious conflict of interest. What ever happened to trying to be like Caesar's wife...trying to be above reproach. GE certainly is a major company and worthy of a fair amount of coverage..but the bias was the ethical journalistic problem I had with it. I am sure Bruno Cohen knows better than this..and hope he at least glances at these boards now and then. You guys need to be straight arrows..particularly with the rising public discontent with conglomerates owning news outlets...think about it.
Cheers
Ron

Ted,

I woke up late today, so said to myself the hell with the markets, I'll take care of the animals and listen to the Dolans on WOR-AM out of NYC while I'm changing our dog's water and breaking out the cat food.... Never expected to hear you call in just before the rate cut! Very interesting back and forth with Ken and Daria. (you need some work on your Bob Grant impersonation though pal! <big grin> Daria stole my thunder, as I was going to mention that David Tice made a fairly funny remark that went something like: There is more talk of bottoms on CNBC than in a proctologist's office.... A couple of years ago, I was telling people there is more talk of tops on CNBC than on the French Riviera! <lol> Yes, the world does not owe us a living, but today's youth is being taught otherwise to a great extent most unfortunately.
Over on the Prodigy boards, I mentioned it would be better if the Fed gave us a 1/4 point rate cut rather than the 1/2 point cut almost everyone was screaming for, as it would allow them more wiggle room in the future. Some said the market would be down big time if they only cut a 1/4, but the market held up very well today all things considered.

Morning Ted, just a quick note.

Why don't you guys as CNBC stop having guests like Larry Kudlow etc that keep looking up?

You are contributing to the big lie laid upon the general public.

This isn't meant to be a flame at you, but the guests you guys consistently have on the air must have really sore necks from continiuosly looking up.

When was the last time you had Fleck on or any otyher rational person to give an argument as to why we are in deep doo doo in this economy?

Why not get someone on there that says once comsumers max out their CC deby our econo is going to get real nasty.

Did you know the average house hold is carrying something like 15K in CC balances per month? That comes to close to $400/month in service charges alone.

Does this not alarm anyone else?
