I'm sorry, it was John Conyers not Charlie Rangle.

The conversation centered around the trouble that Senator Torricelli from NJ has found himself in regarding bribes and campaign contributions.

The congressman Conyers, in defense of Senator Torricelli, made a statement that really caught my attention.

I don't remember the exact wording, but it went something like this. If Torrecelli were to be found guilty of breaking a law Conyers said, This isn't just anyone, this is a Senator. Do you know that we could lose a seat in a closely divided Senate and the power could switch back to a Republican controlled Senate?

My very first impression was that Conyers was implying that we just can't even go there and therefore Torricelli must be protected from prosecution lest the Dems lose what little control they hold in the Senate. In other words, treat the Senator differently from American citizens because there is just too much to lose.

He also fell back on the old "vast right wing conspiracy" thing. He said that it was two days after Jeffords jumped ship that the mainstream media began receiving anonymous tips about the investigation into Torricelli and that was just too coincidental.

Guess we are just expected to blame everyone but the Senator from NJ for the whole mess?
