Josh,We have huge problems here in Canada. All the government services are overmanned and overpaid.
This is teachers, civil servants at all levels, garbage men, postmen etc.
As a result we have far higher taxes than the USA because so much is wasted to feed union greed.
If it were not for the resource revenue(Steel, Oil, paper etc) we would be a bankrupt nation.
The low value of the dollar reflects the way the rest of the world evaluates us economically.
Our electoral system perpetuates this as the winner does not need a majority(more than 50%). he just need more than the next guy.
You get situations where 6 guys run for office and the winner gets in with 20% of the vote with the others ranked below that19,18,17,16,15 or whatever adds to 100%.
We also have people who have been so worn down by this that less than 50% actually go to the polls to vote.
This means an active party that is only 10% of the people can win an election if they get their 10% to vote (every man and woman)
We need tto change this. Those in power like it, they eat well.
Our prime minister would be jailed in the USA for political crimes, but here he decides if he prosecutes hisself(surprise....nothing wrong was done by me, so I will not prosecute myself)

Another thing needed is a sealed ballot for the members of parliament(equivalent to your congressmen).
Right now we see their votes, same as in USA. That means we can exert pressure on them. Votes can be traded etc. Now since we are a solid part system and each member muct vote the way the prime minister tells him to we do not have the balance a secret ballot would bring.

In the USA, groups are formed, votes traded by this ability that everyman has to see their vote. That give people a power over the congressmen. Lobby groups can coerce then by threats to keep back ddonations etc.

There is another thing, why does the USA allow official bribery groups?

All this flows from the lack of a secret ballot.
It is not the people who care. It is the lobby groups and other pols who watch who votes for which bill.

I say we both need secret ballots in congress and parliament so the elected reps can vote their heart.
The people can judge them and give them that trust in exchange for breaking the steel rings on the pork barrels.
