<<Democrats were convinced Social Security demagoguery would spook seniors and low-income whites in this week's special election.>>

The "Social Security as religious cult" generation is quietly but quickly passing from the scene. The boomers are far more sheepish about the whole thing: They know it's a scam that's on the short list for greatest financial fraud in history. But, to a great extent, many of them want to keep the illusion from collapsing while they cash out by ripping off the following generation.

The post-boomers have no illusions at all about the program. They are gradually becoming empowered, as they figure out that paying taxes and not voting amounts to tribute to an oppressor.

The boomer support for the current system, while strong, has never (and never will) reach 50% in that group. Combined with the gradually-more-aware subsequent generations, there is a major force of electoral power forming on the horizon. Whichever party manages to get in front of it first will be able to pose as leaders for a good part of the rest of the new century...

Any state which almost puts Ollie North in power is a lost cause anyway. Lots of retired CIA types living there I guess.

Party switches to come - all leaving the GOP - just wait. Jeffords was just the beginning. Bush is desperately trying to pose as a moderate and Cheney is keeping his mouth shut up to try and do damage control. But McCain, Chaffee and many others have seen enough. And when the scandals start leaking out about the billions they've ripped off we the consumer the backlash will be tremendous. I wouldn't be surprised is Cheney steps down within a year as Spiro Agnew did. And all he did was get a few million from the milk lobby and deliver it in cash. The energy ripoffs are in the hundreds of billions and still running. All this during a time when BUSH/CHENEY should be concetrating on fixing our economy not ripping us off or covering their asses.
BUSH/CHENY will go down in history as one of the most shameful adn weak administrations of all time. Once congress is lost to them (the fall of the corrupt soft money king DeLay) they won't be able to do anything anyway except try to fend off impeachment trials.
