What these county governments forget is that every household buys a dishwasher, refrigerator, lawn mower, grill, groceries, car, etc. Even if the county doesn't receive direct tax benefits in the form of collecting more real estate tax the higher density housing adds to the general overall economic health of the region. If you look at the roll out of national retail stores and chains you'll see that the population has to reach a certain density before they will even consider locating a store in the area.

Although I have to admit they sure are able to sock it to the McMansion owners in real estate taxes. My sister and her husband bought a new 8k square luxury home that has yearly taxes that are double what I pay for my total yearly mortgage payment (taxes and insurance included). Good thing they paid cash for the house.

They've been complaining about townhouses for 15 years. They seem to be focusing on bigfoot houses, luxury condos, and large apartment blocks. Limiting the building of townhouses will cause those prices to increase as well. The amount which the localities charge for public education has risen much beyond the growth in median income. They were talking about shutting schools in the early to mid 90s due to declining enrollment and never got around to it.
