John, I agree about the US West move. Local voice service may be a slow grower (or even a no grower), but its a cash cow and will be profitable for many years to come. This will fund expansion and migration to pure data networks over the next 10 or more years. The idea that companies could simply build massive data networks and hopefully survive somehow until profitability has proven to be a major bust, for both those providers, and the companies selling equipment.
