They were- -and a lot more women died as a result of them. As one would expect. I consider "illegal" abortions to be practically synonymous with "unsafe." Mothers have always risked their life and their health, in order to exercise their choice over their bodies and their embryos. So if embryos were ever declared persons and citizens under the Bill of Rights, mothers would certainly risk prison and a ruined life. They already risk a ruined life where abortion is illegal, whether it be merely death, or whether it be permanent damage to their health--primarily (but not limited to) their reproductive system.
