Look for the new dominant Hispanic population in California to put an end to the tree-hugging, high-taxing nonsense in that state that caused their energy crisis. The anemic Republican party in CA will be trying to make a come back from their ruinous journey into Huffingtinism, and will find fertile ground in the emerging California Hispanic middle class. I would suggest to them that they begin by recruiting middle-class Hispanic conservatives for every office they contest for in Southern CA, then give serious consideration to a Hispanic conservative for one of the state's major offices.

Don't think they're not getting that word from the Bush team, as a condition for the new money they need for the job. I will be looking for the first signs of Republican resurgence in California. If they go about it right, they can grab a Senate seat there in 2004...

What makes you think there would have been an 800% price spike if the full cost had been passed along? When the prices started rising rapidly, consumers and businesses would have cut back sharply- -much more sharply than 15%- -and prices would never reach 800%. The only reason they did is because Davis put the state treasury in between to assure his own re-election. For that he should instead be impeached.

You think Bush coming to the WH had something to do with this? What I remember is that first price controls came off in southern CA and prices rose sharply there, then they came off statewide and prices rose statewide. Those removals of caps were written into the dereg law and had nothing to do with Washington, DC.

Do you live in CA? Do you know what actually happened here?

I'm not going to argue that energy producers have not taken advantage of CAs situation- -they have. But the people of this state first put themselves in a situation where they could be screwed. Largely for your wonderful environmental reasons, they stopped construction of power plants for many years. Had this state had excess generating capacity when those caps came off, you wouldn't see anything like the current situation. Do you dispute that?

Before dereg, Calpine proposed building a plant n southern San Jose. The San Jose City Council went into NIMBY mode and said "Not no, but HELL NO!" The the current crisis hit and they reversed themselves. Now for murky reasons, they've switched back to NO. They seem to truly believe that electricity is something that just comes out of a wall plug.

If the whole country did this we wouldn't need to drill off our most sensitive coastlines or in our wilderness areas.
The energy consumption of Western Civilization has been increasing steadily since the Industrial Revolution. You might decrease consumption for a while by conservation, but soon youj will surpass the pre-conservation level. what do you propose to do then? Shut down civilization?

Start with passage of campaign finance reform to keep the pigs from the troughs and the foxes from the chicken coops.
Sorry. I'm not a communist- -big or small C.
