Recession of profits in the new economy but the old economy moves along fine..<The housing market remains the really big engine that could. Once again defying expectations of moderation, existing home sales rose at a 2.9% annual rate (3.5% year-ago rate) in May to a 5.37 million annualized rate. This strength is all the more remarkable in that it comes not only amidst weaker job markets and consumer confidence, but slightly higher mortgage rates for the month of May. The level of activity remains historically high and continues to help keep the economy out of recession.>
