I have heard about it. It's a technology that makes fiber to the curb cheaper. This will enable more DSL connections.

JDSU does not compete with Mitsubishi or anyone else at the systems level.

More on PONS:

. . .Expectations of the market size for PON technology in business applications need to be tempered by the realities of the space it is addressing. There will hardly be ubiquitous deployment of PONs. The manufacturers will not be hitting the huge general fiber pool to the business market. PONs will tend to nip at the low end of the market where fiber access from a cost point of view cannot be justified with other solutions. There is just not enough traffic in these cases to justify the cost of direct Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) pipes or SONET connections. By sharing the bandwidth with multiple subscribers, a PON makes it affordable for smaller businesses to get fiber access.
