Grateful Dead Bassist, Berkeley Native To Be Honored on 'Phil Lesh Day'

Because of his musical and humanitarian accomplishments, the Berkeley
City Council will honor Grateful Dead bassist and Berkeley native
Phil Lesh by proclaiming July 1 "Phil Lesh Day."

Lesh will make his 34th performance on the stage of the Greek Theatre
on July 1, earning him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Councilmember Kriss Worthington, the measure's author, said the
original idea for Phil Lesh Day arose during a conversation with
Shannon Snead, a UC Berkeley student who wrote an article about Lesh.

After Snead informed him of Lesh's many accomplishments, Worthington
said he decided something should be done to honor him. Worthington
noted Lesh's musical career is not limited to the Grateful Dead-he
also conducted the Berkeley Symphony.

The council's resolution recognized Lesh as an avid supporter of
humanitarian organizations, such as the Unbroken Chain Foundation,
which he created with Jerry Garcia. The Foundation gives funding to
education and other nonprofit organizations.
