"I wonder if anything could be done in the domain of upgrade economics to minimize the cost of moving to PON/FTTH when deploying those NGDLCs. Any idea ??"

Crossy- Good question.

Frank and/or ftth(others?)- Is there any cross over between NGDLCs and PON/FTTH? Can the remote terminal where the CO fiber is terminated be a part of a PON/FTTH network? If the answer is "yes" then it's a fantastic incentive for the ILECs to go ahead and start rolling it out. ILECs love incremental capex. If NGDLC paves the way (beyond just trenching fiber) to PON/FTTH architecture, then that would be good news. But I have a feeling everything in the NGDLC is trashed once fiber moves beyond the remote terminal towards the customer. Right? -MikeM(From Florida)
