hi gott

re, "no spammer has ever requested a receipt from me"

nor have i ever been asked for a receipt by a spammer. and i am afraid i may have gotten off track.

my statement that seemed to have been called into question was that deleting email before opening it is a recommended method of fighting spam.... the point being that spammers know if mail has been opened.

to support that statement, i could only produce facts that aol email accounts know whether or not email has been delivered and then whether or not it has been opened. what does aol have in the way of subscribers? 23 million people, i think? quite a few, anyway.

coupled with the fact that right now the technology also exists (via receipt features) for email senders to know whether or not mail has been opened, i am personally willing to stick with my contention that deleting unopened mail is preferable to deleting opened mail.

perhaps i will have time to search out some articles on spam that allude to this premise. i did send email to the author of one such article, asking for her opinion on the subject.

in the meantime, i wanted to clarify that i have not said that spammers are requesting return receipts. my apologies if i did not make that clear. the subject was broached more or less as a demonstration that this sort of tracking is very easy to achieve and prevalent.

for sure, if i learn more on this, i will share it with the thread.

:)
