"Particularly in light of the fact that CableLabs seems to have given up on the concept of competing on "life-line" service."

Ray- How come you think this? From listening to the CCs of some MSO's rolling our circuit-switched cable voice, lifeline is extremely important. I believe one CEOs said it's either lifeline or nothing.

"The only way I see them selling it is as a LD meter killer, i.e. offering unmetered long distance telephony for a fixed monthly fee."

LD killer? How would the MSO's be able to offer LD at a discount if their IP voice is only on their metro network? Once it leaves the class five at their super headends, they have to pay someone to put the traffic on the LD network. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something as I unfortunately have a lot of my investments tied up in cable infrastructure.

MSOs are selling local voice service for less than the ILECs. The average price paid per sub for local voice is $50/month. I heard this right from one of the MSO's CC. I think it was....hmmm. Sorry. Can't remember. Keep in mind this is still a pittance compared to what businesses pay for voice. That's what's scary to me as the MSOs target consumers. Like I mentioned before, I doubt the ILECs are too worried about losing consumer voice to the MSOs. I think the ILECs fear (as they should) the MSOs are moving into their business territory. This is about the only place I see hope for MSO capex.

Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)
