USG (USG: news, msgs, alerts) sank more than 17 percent after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday. USG's three major American subsidiaries, United States Gypsum, USG Interiors, and L&W Supply, filed as well. U.S. Gypsum has been named in 250,000 asbestos-related personal injury claims since 1994 and has paid over $450 million, before insurance recoveries, to manage and resolve asbestos-related litigation during this time period, according to USG. USG is the eighth company in the last eighteen month to file for Chapter 11 because of asbestos-related litigation, USG said in a statement. "The asbestos litigation system is clearly out of control," said CEO William C. Foote. "We have said repeatedly that U.S. Gypsum can afford to pay for its own liability."
