Dear Milo:

I thought it was obvious. They are giving IA-64 2 to 3 years to prove itself. If it starts to slip or loses in the market, they will drop it so fast it would make your head spin. Obviously, it (Itanium) is not good enough yet. If McKinley is also less than stupendous, they could simply do what HP has done and delay switchover (or state IA-64 had it's chance and RIP). They could still put Hammer (x86-64) into 32 bit servers and allow it to take share from IA-64. If IA-64 couldn't compete, well too bad for IA-64. Two to three years ago, everyone jumped onto the IA-64 bandwagon. It still isn't out of the station proper yet.

Pete

Re: "Why is it taking so long.. Thought Itanium was shipping now?"

You sited two architectures - Alpha and Tandem/Himalaya - that need to be transitioned to ITanium.

ITanium-based ProLiant servers will be shipped this year from Compaq.
