Tim, re: We are seeing at the high end just a replay of the "industry standard, open architecture" history seen in the 1980s and 90s with PCs

I agree wholeheartedly. As Yogi B. once said: "It's deja vu all over again."

The way the Intel/Compaq agreement is structured, I don't see any way for DOJ or FTC to consider contrary action.

Kind regards,
greg

Tim, on a tangent and off topic,

<Second, the Anti-Intel, Anti-Microsoft Pro-Gore Axis LOST THE ELECTION. The consortium of Intel- and Microsoft-bashing tech companies bet on Al Gore. He lost.>

There are still Sore Losermen out there who will gladly remind you that Al Gore won the popular vote.

By the way, which tech companies were notable supporters of the Inventor of the Internet? I know for a fact that Gordon Moore himself was a contributor to the Bush campaign, and Craig Barrett is also a Republican. Not sure about Andy Grove, though I'd imagine he's a Democrat.

TC - Re: "We are seeing at the high end just a replay of the "industry standard, open architecture" history seen in the 1980s and 90s with PCs."

That appears to be what is playing out.

However, 2 camps developed & survived - the Wintel Camp and Apple (as you so rightly know !).

In this case, SUN appears to be a real close "analogue" of Apple - manufacturing both the hardware and the Solaris OS.
