Alcatel Makes Buyout Offers to 9,000 U.S. Workers, Paper Says
By Juliann Walsh

Plano, Texas, June 26 (Bloomberg) -- Alcatel SA, which made a failed attempt last month to buy Lucent Technologies Inc., offered about 9,000 U.S. workers voluntary buyout packages as the company tries to trims costs, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The French telecommunications company, which has its U.S. headquarters in Plano, Texas, declined to give a total number of planned job cuts. On Monday, the company announced it found a buyer for a factory in Richardson, Texas, that had been on the market since February, the paper said.

About 15,000 of Alcatel's 130,000 employees work in the U.S. The employees were told about the buyout packages on Friday and must sign up before the end of this week to participate, a company spokesman told the paper.

Workers at the Richardson factory, the DSL modem business and enterprise group are not eligible for the package. In May, the company exited mobile phone manufacturing, the paper said.
