ACLU Leftist Hypocrites Want No Free Speech for Clarence Thomas So-called American Civil Liberties Union claims to be a nonpartisan group that defends the rights of all Americans, but every once in a while its most fanatical members expose it for the left-wing bastion of intolerance that it so sadly has degenerated into. The latest example: The Honolulu ACLU chapter's mean-spirited attack on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Honolulu Weekly claims this outfit is composed of "some of Hawaii's leading proponents of free expression" who nevertheless decided not to let Thomas debate ACLU grand pooh-bah Nadine Strossen at a - we are not making this up, as Dave Barry says - conference on the First Amendment. Thomas' crime, of course, is following the Constitution instead of inventing socialist legislation from the bench and having the nerve to be black but not live on the Democrat plantation. Some lawyer named Daphne Barbee-Wooten wrote to an ACLU committee fretting over the matter: "Bringing Clarence Thomas sends a message that the Hawaii ACLU promotes and honors black Uncle Toms who turn their back on civil rights.” Fellow "civil libertarian" Eric Ferrer wrote that Thomas is "an anti-Christ [sic], a Hitler, and it’s like having a serial murderer debate the value of life.” Even worse, Ferrer feared - oh, the horror! - a free exchange of ideas. "There’s a chance, even a likelihood, that a lot of people might like his views.” No wonder its detractors refer to ACLU as American Criminal Lovers Union and American Commies and Leftists United.
