The real civil rights job of the 20th century was cleaning the racism out of the written laws. In a nation of laws, that creates equal opportunity. That's why the Republicans have a better civil rights record: They understood the problem, while the Democrats-true to form-directed their passions toward their need to create constituencies. You can't solve problems if you want to create constituencies, but you MUST lie to people, and the Democrats chose to lie to the blacks. They continue that to this day, and have made it into an art form. But lies-while they can be sustained for longer than we Internet folks tend to think possible, are eventually exposed-and then are made to fade away.

The lies about the liberals being "the blacks only friends" are beginning, gradually, to be exposed. The attempted election fix, as well as the rigging of the Senate on impeachment, were always expected to have their greatest impact on the public attitude in the longer run.
