Re: ITanium is ready - and you immediately change the subject

Itanic has been "ready" for a year. And SUN just keeps selling boxes (though, like everyone else in the sector, far fewer than last year). And SUN may finally ship a competitive (well, less uncompetitive) processor. Alpha, one of the few competitors for SUN in large scale systems, is now folding its hand, leaving a clear field for SUN.

It's even possible that Intel may have been better off when Alpha was confusing buyers of Unix boxes. Do you think that buyers who were just orphaned by Compaq on Alpha will want to jump onto the next slideware longshot from the same company? Why not make the obvious move to a solid, stable, number 1?

the latest 1 GHz Alphas are the fastest yet. The system achieves 230,533 tpmC with a price/performance rating of $47.90. This result is the highest submitted so far for the non-clustered TPC-C benchmark, beating the previous top score of 222,772 tpmC for the PRIMEPOWER 2000, which is based on 48 SPARC64 GP processors running at 563 MHz. According to the result submission, the 1 GHz GS320 should be available by the end of next month

With Alpha officially dead, that leaves Sparc/Solaris the clear leader in large scale, high performance systems. Thanks to SUN's unparalleled processor clustering technology, they remain number 1 in large systems - and Intel just killed off one of the challengers.
