hi tc

i'm glad that someone besides me has read that about spammer's ability to track if/when their mail has been opened. thanks for sharing that.

"the thread did it's normal job of teaching the participants"

right you are. it's encouraging when we work together to uncover info. i know that to some readers the exchanges may appear to be angry, but i can assure everyone that that is not the case.

:)

hi tc

well over a year ago on this thread, during a discussion on spam and the consequences one suffers from opening it (the sender will know it's been opened), i posted a quote (#reply-15994334) from a gal named wanda sloan, who said, "There is a way to track mail now, yes. That is one reason that spammers use HTML format. They cannot tell, however, if you download it, they only can tell if you actually open it."

the thread discussion at the time seemed to center on whether or not this was possible (for a spammer to know if someone opened his mail).

i just ran across this goodie in pcmagazine (10/01/02 issue), and wanted to post it to further verify what sloan (and others, myself included) have said about the ability to know when spam is opened, regardless of whether or not it is deleted or replied to....

"McAfee Internet Security 5.0 surpasses both Norton Internet Security and ZoneAlarm Pro in the ease with which the program lets you specify whether (for example) to allow HTML e-mail to phone home when you view the message. You may be surprised to see a simple eBay outbid notice secretly trying to send data back to eBay; Internet Security warns you and lets you block or allow the data."

hope this helps
