>>UK economy beats forecasts

Economic performance was better than thought
The UK unveiled a better-than-expected set of
first-quarter economic figures on Tuesday,
easing fears of a slowdown.

The current-account deficit - the measure of
how much money flowing out of the UK
exceeds the amount flowing in - fell to £180m
in the first quarter, down from £3.7bn in the
last quarter of 2000.

The figure was a long way outside the range of
forecasts, which had all indicated that the
deficit would widen to some £4.2bn.

At the same time, it was revealed that
first-quarter gross domestic product (GDP)
rose by 0.5%, up from the previous estimate of
0.4%.

On an annual basis, that works out at 2.7%
growth for the year.<<
