David... I don't think Israel is frightened. In fact, they made Arafat the Palestinian leader in hopes that it might moderate him.

If they do away with Arafat as a result of an renewed occupation of the PA, they will be in a position of dictating who will replace him.

The key thing for Israel is to build up enough international support for their own position (through their suffering repeated car bombings... etc), and exposing Arafat's utter lack of control over Hamas and other extremist groups. There is already substantial sympathy building for Israel as they are seen as being more patient than the Palestinians.

When they are confident that impatience with Arafat has built to a high enough level they will strike.
