And I've seen people reading newspapers, too. I think it's pretty irresponsible.

I've read magazines, but only when I was stopped at a red light, and not normally if I am the first car at the red light. (I can see the car ahead of me and the magazine but I can't easily see the light and the magazine at the same time ).

<<<My pet peeve is putting on makeup while driving. I don't know how many times I saw that during my morning commute. Even mascara. I'd be afraid of poking myself in the eye, at a minimum. And I've seen people reading newspapers, too. I think it's pretty irresponsible.>>>

Do you realize that this is farding in the car and only women do it?

I read an article that said that one reason Germany has far fewer accidents than we do even though they have no speed limits on their autobahns is that in Germany, drivers are serious about driving. They don't talk on cell phones, read, put on makeup, etc. It's a cultural thing. We consider time sitting in a car to be "wasted" time if we can't multi-task it.

Of course, Germany is a lot smaller and has a lot less traffic -- I doubt there are many two hour commutes there! It's hard for me to be stuck in Seattle traffic and be willing to do nothing but drive at 2 mph for a half an hour trying to get past the Rainier Brewery (now Tully's Coffee).
