The OS and software are needed to make it fully significant. However, I tend to think revenue made from the announced pilots is probably underestimated.

Don't know. Maybe they're waiting until the momentum on the IA-64 infrastructure is sufficiently strong enough, to minimize the cost of a shift?

Some very big companies are after their market.

But Sun always seems to be very smart at finding new markets and new opportunities. When haven't they? I don't know Sun's history, but in the time I've watched them, they have.

As bad as some of the sectors in the comm nw market are, I wonder if some of Intel's competitors will eventually fall off? Does the last one left standing win?

You've been asking good questions on the comm business. Wish I knew the answers. It's ugly for the short-term in comm.

But I'm a strong believer in the nw comm business for the long-term. The long-term trend for human interaction is towards a lot more communications, not less. Businesses have a long way to go.

I'm seeing surprisingly stronger evidence of a shift to IP than expected, which tells me Intel's bet on IP replacing packet-switched is right. (Though the question for a big company like Intel that needs a big market now rather than later, would be "how soon?")
