Paul:

"So what has AMD provided in the server space - cheap prices?

And where are their customers - besides Cracker-Jack-In-The-Boxx ?"

As mentioned, Paul, AMD is currently taking market share away from INTC at an alarming rate it would seem in both the consumer and mobile spaces...Looks like INTC is taking whatever steps it can to protect the next AMD onslaught to take place over the next couple of years in the server/workstation space...Just as 2 years ago, AMD had no adequate response to P3 in the top end, but now has the superior offering in the top end with its Athy...and just as 'til a month ago AMD had no real presence in the mobile space but now has the superior offering in this space...it might not be out of the realm of possibility that within 1 year, AMD'll be offering a superior range of products across the server/workstation space as well...

If INTC continues to flounder with its P4, INTC is going to see a whole lot of red over the next while...unless they can somehow shore up the server space to hide the fundamental problems befuddling the P4!!!

Paul,

Re: "And where are their customers - besides Cracker-Jack-In-The-Boxx ?"

Seems like the Compaq "decision" to go with the "Athwipers" and purchase
DEC has come full circle.

"Compaq Phasing Out Its Alpha Line, Deepening Cuts"

"In the mid-1990s, Alpha was considered a pioneering microprocessor, developed
by Compaq's Digital Equipment Corp unit, but its challenge to Intel was
largely ineffective."

Make It So,
