I was aware that the 30-30 wounds more too :) I think the deerhunter should use a bigger 30 calibre. 30 cal M1 carbine would be better. M1 carbine was a hard to beat weapon. Take it over the M16 anyday. They should take the springfield 30-06 cartridge and put it in a recoil, noise and flash reduced plastic stock weapon with a 140 grain round and semi 3-burst, 30 R clip. Titanium barrel. A frag add-on would use a launcher that would clip and declip and set range on rounds to detonate by laser/passive-optical rangeing. Barrel would free float steady cam style to hold long targets with auto ranging. Thumbwheel could set range and scope field quickly.

At 3000 feet pre second and 180 grains the old WWII springfield round in the garand was hard to beat all round. But the Garand was heavy (14 pounds) and fouled. If they could beat that with a simpler action it would be a good all round infantry tool. The BAR used the 30-06 and it was the weapon of choice to flush snipers at +800 metres. Very good all round tool. The new Heckler and Koch infrantry frag and snipe weapon at $36,000.00 a crack is way overkill cost wise. It could be done cheaper.
