most individual investors are driven by a perverse desire to buy at or near the top and sell at or near the bottom. This is an eternal truth

Sorry, but I disagree. That is like saying we are all doomed to lives of failure. . . never to learn anything from our mistakes.

we get too optimistic at the top and we get too pessimistic at the bottom. Nothing is going to change that.

Again, I disagree. This thread is full of contrarians. . .many of which sold techs on alerts posted here in March/April 2000, when the market was in full bloom. . . in other words, we SOLD the top. . . .there have been many swings where we have bought bottoms and sold off tops. And many of us are still awaiting a retest of the April 4 low before jumping back in for the long-term. . . . again buying the bottom.

information is not the same as wisdom

Rather. . . .Wisdom abounds, as information disseminates.
We learn from our mistakes. We profit from what we learn. Nothing has changed around here. Where have you been?

You're not speaking for me with that thought. Are you basing this observation on what you witnessed in that brief period between 98 and 2000 ?? There's a whole junk of years prior to that. Would you have said the same thing to someone who bought MSFT weeks prior to the first split ? I'm sure it hit a 52 week high back then and may have looked "overpriced". Without knowing the future of MSFT's stock performance, would you have called that person perverse ?

Dipy,
You qualified your post with "most individual investors" . Unfortunately you appear to have been beat up because readers of your post chose to take it personally. Without a doubt, the respondees to your post are not "most individual investors" but rather experienced, saavy upper end of the bell curve investors.
In context, I agree with your post 100%. Many, many, lukers of this thread recognized themselves in your observation and I'm sure it gave them reason to reflect on their own investing conduct. Your post was constructive and thanks for posting it.
Regards
C

Did you see the piece on analysts on "Dateline" last night? It sure put them in a bad light -- not that they don't deserve to be. I hope that people who trade on-line have gotten wiser about how analysts operate -- mostly in favor of the large brokerage firms that employ them.
