Carolyn,

I don't know the answer to that question. I believe that fuel cells have been around for a long time.

The real question (or problem) lies in the difficulty to bring new ideas to the commercial market place, the ability to produce in mass quantities profitably. It took years and years to get lithium polymer to the market. It still proves to be a very difficult challenge for many companies to manufacture it automatically.

Fuel cells may be quite a ways off.

It is interesting to note that the fuel cell was invented in 1840 by William Grove, a Welshman. But nothing much happened because he didn't know what to do with that pesky by-product, electricity!
