<Whatever they save from consolidation, they will loose in disgruntled customers and Itanic porting costs, let alone they just replaced an elegant ISA with a very ugly and difficult for compilers one.> Compaq would have lost a lot of customers anyway because on not being able to invest properly in any of the alternatives and the likes of Dell would picked the company to death over time. This was a proactive move. There is going to be short term (2-4 years) pain until the transition gets done but after that the sailing would get better.
