He went overseas with everyone expecting him to fall on his face, and came back with a bunch of buddies over there. Not bad for a guy who supposedly knew nothing about foreign affairs. Well, he didn't fall on his face -- or barf on anyone -- I must admit (though that line about "looking into Putin's eyes" sounded pretty naive). But it will take six months of reading between the lines to answer the real question: did the European leaders see someone they could do business with, or a stuffed shirt, a figurehead? Bush has not yet shown that he does know anything about foreign policy. His interviewers have tossed the softest of softball questions, as in Peggy Noonan's gushing piece in the WSJ two days ago. They certainly haven't acted as if Bush was up the challenge of even a moderately tough question. Now he has Israel and Palestines inching toward settlement--Clinton couldnt accomplish that even though he tried harder than anyone else I think Not a chance, JDN. Arafat is playing his usual semi-cease-fire games, but I don't think Sharon is going to fall for them. I do like Bush's support of Sharon so far; I just hope he doesn't start the old game of "let's pretend there is a cease-fire and condemn Israel for responding to gunfire", which the Arab states must be pressuring him to do. But if this "cease-fire" holds for a month it will be a miracle; there will be no settlement with the Palestinians while Arafat's in charge. He is so friendly and so sociable he is the kind of person its HARD to turn down That's a good quality in a President for sure. But does Bush know anything? Does he understand that it's important to know anything, such as history and national interests, or does he really believe that he can get by on gut feel and looking into peoples' eyes and giving them nicknames?
