I can definitely see where the hype would become very annoying. However, the character of the Lakers team changed instantly when he became coach. They were very lazy mentally, and now they are one of the mentally toughest teams in the league. They remind me of the old Bulls, in that once they get an edge on you in a series, the series is over. Now that I think about it, Shaq had been in the NBA a while before Phil arrived, so his improved defense and focus cannot be attributed to age. I think Riley, Jackson, and Brown are three of the most brilliant coaches in the league (along with the Hawks' Lon Kruger -g-).

Yeah, but Riles almost always wins his division, year in year out. He may not have won another championship after the Lakers, but he's consistent.
