Oild driller falling on news that inventory levels of oil and gas for the summer month are higher than expected. Enery prices in general are expected to pull back.

Close There was modest activity among a few individual issues and selected sectors today but the focus throughout was on the Fed and the widely anticipated interest rate cut. They slashed rates for the sixth time this year, this time by 25 bp, bringing the total drop in the Fed Funds rate during this cycle to 275 bp. The announcement triggered a pickup in volatility and a knee jerk drop but the marketplace lacked either the intestinal fortitude or the conviction to break out of its short term trading range.

MARKET RECAP
Like a squadron of kamikaze pilots, the major indices nose-dived shortly after two o’clock eastern time when Alan Greenspan stepped forward to deliver the verdict. The Fed bestowed a 25-basis point interest-rate cut on the masses, leaving some complaining that old Alan was growing stingy. The prior five rate cuts the market received this year had been for 50-basis points each. Falling profits, a
decline in corporate spending, weak consumer spending, and slower growth abroad continue to drag the economy down. Inflation is expected to be contained. With the overnight interest rate now at 3.75, investors learned to be content with what they received, pushing the market back into the bright blue skies of positive territory.

SECTOR SIESTA FOR WEDNESDAY
Equities moved markedly lower in the aftermath of the Federal Reserve's 25-basis point rate cut at 2:15 this afternoon. However, buyers returned with a vengeance to bring equities back close to where they were just before the rate cut. The market had expected at least a 25
basis-point cut, however it was uncertain whether the Fed would oblige - or how the markets would react. At 2:00 p.m all major market indices were trading at or near breakeven. At that time, only the S&P 500 Index (SPX - 1215.65) was in negative territory. Currently, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDU - 10,480.2) is currently up eight points or
0.08 percent and the Nasdaq Composite (COMP - 2,074.5) is up 0.48 percent. The SPX is down 0.03 percent.
