I don't think it would have looked as good for the shorts if it had tanked hard. Then the buyers would have rushed in on cue. From the shorters' point of view, the more complacency the better.

Good crashes sneak up on the buyers. They don't take the stage with a nice introduction from the FOMC. Maybe it'll take some more earnings warnings. On the other hand, if there's any good news ...

But at some point, all those gaps from April will be filled.
