With the disarray in the CLEC world, with MSOs pushing out the introduction of DOCSIS 1.1 by at least 4 quarters and with the ILECs intent on frustrating the future in order to suckle off the existing plant as long as possible, I see no reason to be optimistic that any of the projections from the likes of Gartner Group, CIR, RHK, or InStat will be close to being fulfilled. The typical research report is always "jam tomorrow" with the hockey stick of revenues/earnings always tantalizingly 12 or 16 quarters out. So easy to re-write these scripts year after year. And this year in telecom? Oh, it's just an outlier. Telecom really isn't a cyclical business that crammed 6 years worth of growth into 2. Oh no, it'll bounce right back, say the pundits, the analysts and cheerleaders. Guess what? It ain't gonna be like that, see. It's going to be very painful for a long time forward. Everyday, another brick falls out of the wall. Today's the Moody's and Fitch's downgrades of LU debt to junk status. What was once one of America's proudest research labs is reduced to beggar status, fininacially speaking. This isn't going to turn around soon enough for anybody, I'm afraid. Sorry to be so gloomy, I do see the overall economy to be in much better shape than telecom. Here's an upbeat story for you.... Last night I visited a new retail outlet here in Bend. A women's clothing store called Chico's. chicos.com The Company is among the fastest growing small companies in America. The owners were recently on the cover of Business Week receiving lavish praise. They're opening 50 stores a year for the next two years. Last year they grew revenues by 67% and net income by 83%. They are profitable, have a quick ratio of 7:1, and are socially conscious and loved by their employees. I see a success story like that and the Peter Lynch comes out in me. And did I mention that the clothes are stylin', well priced, and that the company is stable enough to trade on the big board (CHS-NYSE)? Why fool around in the telecom junkyard with the rest of the mangy dogs when you can own shares in a beautiful little company that has the growth story that all telecom is green with envy over? And get this. The new Bend location just opened. When they did, they projected the first month's sales. How long did it take to reach the goal? Six days. Thinking Outside the Telephony Booth, Ray :) PS: Here's one that had me on the floor howlin': Message 15998223
