However - I suspect the Crawford patent is about (or already has) to expire.

I thought the "Crawford Patent" issued in 89. Current IP Law states that all applications filed prior to June 1995 are granted 17 years from date of patent. All applications filed after June 1995 are granted 20 years from date of application (however, the US PTO is now granting term extensions).
