LONDON, United Kingdom - Britain is to consider building new nuclear power stations as part of a review of the country's energy supplies, The Times newspaper reported yesterday. The review, announced by Prime Minister Tony Blair, will focus on growing concern about Britain’s dependence on natural gas imports, and about the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Energy minister, Brian Wilson, is to chair a special group aiming to develop a strategy to secure competitive energy supplies for the next generation, according to the report. "The review will need to consider what - if any - role the nuclear industry should play in meeting the environmental (concerns) and security of supply objectives," Wilson was quoted as saying. In its general election manifesto, the Labour Party shelved a pledge not to build nuclear stations. The Financial Times reports that some ministers believe a nuclear revival is inevitable, if Britain is to maintain security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
