Nokia: GPRS Phone To Be Available In Americas By End '01
Dow Jones Newswires

STOCKHOLM -- Finland-based telecommunications giant Nokia Corp. (NOK) said Thursday that its first General Packet Radio Service, or GPRS, enabled mobile phone, the Nokia 8390, is expected to be available in the Americas by the end of 2001.

The GPRS technology can support higher speed data transmission over mobile networks and allows users to stay connected to the Internet.

The Nokia 8390 unit can access data by using a Wireless Access Protocol mobile Internet browser or connecting to a personal computer through an inbuilt infrared port.

Network operators in Europe have already started to offer GPRS subscriptions.
