I support vouchers also. But I don't think they will much solve the problem. I am convinced that love, encouragement and real challenge are necessary ingredients for any child's success in our culture, and that these must generally exist at home. Many poorer homes simply do not provide these vital ingredients to their children in anywhere near the required quantities. In fact, in the black culture there is quite a brutal tendency to discourage academic achievement. While I think this is perhaps changing for the better, it should come as no surprise to anyone that this group so frequently fails at academics. It is not that the children are inferior (I have proven to myself that these children are as bright as any others). They suffer a general defect in their culture. They do not know in their guts that someone believes in them. Generally speaking, no teacher can show a kid this sort of faith. It must come from the parent, and not merely via encouraging words. Kids need to see their parents suffer for them. Once a kid sees his dear old mom and dad sacrificing without fail for him such that should he fail his parents will be crushed, that kid would rather die than fail. He will do amazing things to excel.
