Glenn, I'm buying Moissanite...are you?
>Fake Diamonds
Thursday June 28, 2001

In the hit musical “Moulin Rouge,“ Nicole Kidman loves her dazzling diamonds. Americans spend more than three-quarters of a billion dollars a year on diamonds. Most of these baubles come through the diamond district here in New York City.
Now, there's a new gem catching the celebrity’s eyes. They’re called Moissanite. Jeweler David Gendal says, “We just designed a piece for Hunter Tylo. Brooke Shields has worn it.

Even gold medallists Marion Jones and Mia Hamm have these nifty knockoffs. David says, "Everyone wants to look like a million bucks without spending a million dollars."

Gendal says the lab-created stones are dead ringers for high-quality diamonds. The cost is only one-tenth of the real thing! A 1-carat diamond goes for about $7000. The same size Moissanite is only about $700.

Flashy maybe, but are they fine enough to fool your fiancée?

“Extra” showed couples the real diamond and the Moissanite. One couple thought the real diamond was the fake. Another couldn’t tell the difference.

Moissanite even fools the traditional thermal diamond tester. But what about the pros? We went undercover to jewelers in New York and Las Vegas. None of the places we went were fooled by the Moissanite.

So it doesn't fool the experts, but it probably will your friends and maybe even your fiancée.
