4:02pm 06/28/01 UCLA forecast: 80% chance of recession By Rex Nutting
Economists at UCLA say there's an 80% chance of a recession by the first quarter of 2002. Edward Leamer, professor at UCLA's Anderson School of business, said investment, which propels the economy, has run out of steam. His forecast calls for GDP to fall about 0.2 percent in the second and third quarters and to be unchanged in the fourth quarter before slowly improving next year. Leamer said the economy is fueled by optimism and fear, but we've run out of both: Companies are no longer afraid their competitors will get ahead of them technologically and there's no optimism about earnings.
