Mexican trucks should meet the same safety requirements as American trucks.

How many American trucks meet the requirements for American trucks? When was the last time you saw a weight station that was open? The drivers from Mexico are willing to take a far lower salary for driving, that is the principal distinction.

Charleymane straightened me out on that one. The real problem is that the American trucking industry is over regulated and the safety standards for American trucks needs to be lowered towards the direction of Mexican standards.

The House, by a wide margin, is just being protectionist and while the House and White House are at odds with this issue, it's cool that the Teamsters support the Republicans [in the House]. It wouldn't matter if they supported the White House, that's would be cool also, because that's Republican also. In other words, it doesn't really matter what the position is whether it's protectionist or free trade or safety related. Or in your case lower Mexican wages. In the end the only thing that matters is that the Teamsters support a Republican idea. The actual merits of one position or another is irrelevent.
