TFT-LCD Sales in Taiwan Remain on an Upward Path
June 28, 2001 (TAIPEI) -- Sales in May of the two Taiwanese TFT-LCD panel makers, Acer Display Technology Inc. and Unipac Optoelectronics Corp., remained on an upward path, with the rates of increase over the preceding month 8 percent and 26 percent, respectively.

LCD panels for monitors are still trailing their sales, and panel makers are going forward to shift the size from 15-in. (38cm diagonal) to 17-in. (43cm diagonal), offered at a relatively higher unit price.

Amtran Technology Co., Ltd. is in good business condition with a growth rate of 8 percent month-on-month and 30 percent from the same month the previous year. Other LCD monitor makers in Taiwan, such as Acer Communications & Multimedia Inc., Compal Electronics Inc. and Tatung Co., Ltd. also are keeping rapid sales growth.

However, Taiwanese makers focusing on CRT monitors have been suffering from the business slowdown, as Lite-On Technology Corp.'s sales showed an increase of 17 percent monthly, but fell 23 percent from the same month the previous year, and for Advanced Display Inc., sales fell 22 percent monthly and 39 percent from the same month the previous year. It is clear that the demands from their OEM clients in Japan and in the United States are shifting to LCD monitors, as well as manufacturers in Taiwan.

The situation now is coming close to the limit of price-cutting of 15-in. monitors, which are sold at US$400 or less. Therefore, the trends of major U.S. PC vendors' business strategies are at the center of the interest, such as the promotion sales of PCs with bundled LCD monitors and PCs with an integrated LCD panel.
