Re: "True but it takes a lot of $10 months to equal the difference between $400 and $2600. 220 months if you don't count the time value of money. "

Get serious.

You can get digital TV recording (MPEG2) with a cheap PC and a WinTV (Hauppauge) card or ATI All-In-Wonder-Radeon card -or Matrox equivalent.

And - you have a COMPUTER as well when you are all done watching TV.

I don't know where the author gets his $2600 numbers. I bought a 1GHz Presario with 80MB hard drive, monitor and TV out for $999... add in $99 for TV in and I have the ability to not only save TV a la TIVO, but I can also edit the TV, burn it on CDs, ship it around my network, and, as Paul says, I also have a high performance PC to use for whatever I want. And no subscription fees or other nonsense.

TIVO is not a bad box for what it does - as it happens, my satellite receiver has TIVO built in. But try editing the stored video...
