360networks said seeking protection, won't confirm
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 28 (Reuters) - Employees of troubled fiber-optic network builder 360networks Inc. (Toronto:TSX.TO - news) (NasdaqNM:TSIX - news) were told on Thursday it has sought protection from creditors, a source close to the company told Reuters, although the company declined to confirm the report.
``All I can say is that we are planning an announcement,'' said spokeswoman Michelle Gagne, declining to say what the announced would be about.

The company's shares had earlier been halted on Nasdaq, pending an unspecified news release. The Toronto Stock Exchange did not follow Nasdaq's after-hours move to halt the shares.

The company, which dreamed of building an international fiber-optic network, has been struggling with massive debt and weak demand. It had previously acknowledged it has not ruled out seeking protection from creditors.

The source said the employees were told that filing for protection had been made in an unspecified Canadian court
